How Capable Are You!

Most of us have been through that phase where we are absolutely clueless as to what we are capable of. We don’t know which way to go – whether to follow the herd, or to take the road less travelled by (thank you, dear Robert Frost, for those inspiring lines from ‘The Road Not Taken’).

We tend to underestimate ourselves and completely ignore the very existence of the good things in us, the skills that we possess, and the power of putting our heart and soul in doing what we love.

Kids, or even adults, who ‘think’ they are not capable of doing something are seriously lacking self-awareness. Their minds are cluttered, and they can’t gather their thoughts well. We’ve all gone through this at least once in our lives.

But don’t you worry, guys. You are capable. You are YOU.

The key to get things back on track is to know where you stand. I believe that the biggest strength one can have is to be aware of our weaknesses. Let me make this easy for you:

  1. Take a piece of paper

  2. Draw a line on the paper to divide the paper into two halves

  3. Label the two halves as Strengths and Weaknesses

  4. You’ve got this, buddy

  5. Be honest now

  6. Strengths: Write what you are good at. It can be drawing, playing cricket, creative writing, singing, or even interpersonal skills. These shall never be altered.

  7. Weaknesses: Write about what you ‘feel’ or ‘think’ you are not capable of doing. These could be the things you fear doing. The aim is to move these to Strengths.

  8. Almost done

  9. Stick this piece of paper on the wall

Good job! You now know, after an honest analysis and thought, what you are good at, and what you are lacking in. You’ve won half the battle here.

Now, the immediate goal is to acquire the necessary skills to convert our Weaknesses into Opportunities. Since we are under a lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we can easily access online learning portals such as Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/), BYJUS (https://byjus.com/), Udemy (http://udemy.com), Google Digital Garage (https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage), edX (http://www.edx.org), Swayam (https://www.swayam.gov.in/), and NPTEL (http://www.nptel.ac.in/).

Or, there’s something else you can do – hit me up! I will try my best to get you in touch with people who are passionate to teach, and are ready to help, including me.

This way, you can grab this opportunity and convert your Weaknesses into Strengths. To make sure you remember what you learned, talk to your parents, friends, or teachers about it and, I assure you, it WILL get etched in your memory.

Always remember, CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Never ever forget this simple truth. Most people are good learners, but they suck at recalling what they’d learnt.

It is as simple as brushing your teeth every day, eating your meals without fail, or even filling petrol in your vehicle. You are already consistent. Just apply this to learning as well. Keep trying, keep telling yourself, “Hey, I’ve got this!” This way, you’ll gradually develop this habit.

*Drumroll*

You have won the battle. Congratulations! You are a CHAMPION, you are CAPABLE, you are YOU. You BELIEVE in YOUR OWN SELF, and you DID IT YOURSELF. Follow what Nike tells you –

“Just do it.”

Believe me you, everything else will fall in place.
